How to Get There
Valid Passport with Entry Visa is required for all visitors. Entry Visa
is valid for 28 days and it is easily available at Myanmar
Diplomatic Mission.
International Flight
Yangon has direct air-links with Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong, Dacca,
Taipei, Kuala Lumpur, Calcutta, and Kumming. The Myanmar Airways
International, Thai Airways International, Silk Air, Biman, Mandarin,
Indian Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, and Air China operate scheduled
flights in and out of Yangon.
Enter by Overland
Entry by overland is allowed through Check Points along Yunan-Myanmar
and Thai-Myanmar Borders. Tourists are allowed to enter through Border
Check Points at Mu-se, Nam-Khan, Kyu-gok, Lwe-je, and Kun-lone from Yunan
Province and Tachilek, Myawaddy, Three Pagoda Pass and Kawthaung from
Thailand.
Package tourists from Yunan Province are allowed to travel up
to Yangon and tourists from Thailand are allowed up to Kyaing-Tong and
from Kyaing-tong to Jing-hong (Xishaungbana) in Yunan with a prior
approval.
Customs
All foreign currencies (above US$ 2000), jewelleries, electrical goods
and cameras must be declared to the Customs at the Airport.
For Customs clearance there is a Green Channel for visitors with
nothing to declare and Red Channel for visitors with dutiable items.
Export of antiques and archaeologically valuable items are prohibited.
Foreign Exchange
For the convenience of the visitors, Foreign Exchange Certificates (FECs)
are issued by the Central Bank of Myanmar to use during their stay.
It is compulsory for a Foreign Independent Travellers (FIT) holding
Entry Visa Tourist (EVT) to change on arrival a minimum of US$200 or
equivalent Sterling Pound with Foreign Exchange Certificate 200 units.
This is the minimum amount to be spent by a tourist during his/her stay
in the country.
Payments by FECs is deemed to have been made in Foreign Exchange.
These FECs are acceptable by any person in the Union of Myanmar.
Note: Children up to 12 years and members of the Package Tour Groups
are exempted.

Yangon, the captial city, is the main gateway to
Myanmar. The main tourist centers are Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay and

Other Areas
There are many other places of interest for tourists to visit. e.g:
Kyaik-hti-yo, Mawlamyine (Moulmein), Sittwe (Akyab), Mrauk-Oo, Ngapali
Beach, Chaung-tha Beach, Lashio, Myitkyina, etc. Only guided tours are
allowed to there places with a prior approval from the Tourism Regulation
Department.
It is advisable for tourists to check with Tourist Information Service
before making arrangements to visit outside the main tourist centres.
How to Go About
Visitors have a choice of Travel Agencies to arrange for travels and
tours to the tourists destinations Myanmar Travels & Tours
(state-owned) and other licenced Travel Agencies have their Counters
opened in the Arrival Lounge at the Airport.
Domestic Flights - Myanmar Airways has daily flights to main
tourist centres during the tourists season from October to March. Air
tickets are available at Myanmar Travels & Tours and Myanmar Airways
Head Office, 104, Stand Road.
Railway Service - Regualar Express Trains running daily between
Yangon and Mandalay which take about 12 hours. Visitors to Bagan and Inle
Lake have to get off at Thazi Station to take a bus. Travelling time from
Thazi to Bagan is about 4 hours and from Thazi to Shwe Nyaung (Inle Lake)
about 5 hours. Train tickets are available at Yangon and Mandalay
Stations.
Bus Service - Regular bus service between Bagan and Mandalay,
Bagan and Taunggyi and Taunggyi and Mandalay. Bus tickets are available at
Myanmar Travels & Tours.
Steamer Service - Steamer service from Mandalay down the
Ayeyarwady River to Bagan/Nyaung Oo twice a week. A 12 hour journey
leaving Mandalay in the early morning and arriving Bagan by sunset.
Tickets are available at Myanmar Travels & Tours.
Please Note: - To avoid inconvenience, tourists are advised to
check with Tourist Information Service for up-to date information on
schedules and tickets.
Airport Transfer and Taxi Service
For transfer from airport to hotel, taxis and limousines are
available at the Tourist Information Service at the airport.
Limousine Service and air-con Tour Coaches are available at the
Transport Division at the Inya Lake Hotel. (Phone: 664472)
Licenced Travel Agencies and Private Hotels/Guest Houses have their
own limousines for hire.
Tour Guides
Tourists are advised to avoid touts and use the services of Licensed
Tour Guides only who are available at the Licensed Travel Agencies.
Where to Stay
Visitors have a choice of accommodation from Budget Class Guest
Houses to Deluxe Hotels. There are 42 Hotels under the Hotels and
Tourism Services and over 120 private Hotels/Guest Houses all over the
country. Room rates vary according to location, facilities, standard and
service.
Entrance Fees
Entrance fees are collected at the famous Pagodas, Temples,
Monasteries, Museums, Old Palace and Archaeological Zones. Tickets are
available at the entrance of the respective places or sites.
Airport Tax
US $ 10
Duty Free
Duty free allowance: 2 bottles of liquor, 2 cartoons of cigarettes or
100 cigars and 1/2 litre of perfume.
Weather
The weather is generally warm and dry except during the rainy season
from late-May to September. In northern and north-eastern areas, the
weather is mild and cool in the nights.
Time
GMT + 6 1/2 hours (one hour difference with Singapore and 30 minutes
with Thailand.)

Tourist Information Service counters at the Airport, Railway
Stations, Hotels and Main Office in down-town Yangon are at your service
for more information and assistance you may need.
Some Useful Advice

Reconfirm your international air tickets before going up-country.

Visitors are requested to ignore touts who may approach you for
offering guide services, for exchanging foreign currency into local
currency, or for selling gems of a doubtful nature. The offers may
appear attractive but you could get into trouble and spoil your
visit.

As there is a strict Foreign Exchange Control Regulations,
Tourists are advised to change their foreign currencies only at the
Authorized Money Changers at the Banks, Airports and Hotels.

Tourists are not allowed to bring in or take out Kyats (Myanmar
Currency)

Tourists are also adviced to buy gems, jewelleries and silverware
at the Authorized Shops where you will be given a voucher with a
permit for export.

Always keep your Passport and money in secure places especially
when travelling by train or bus. Report all losses to the nearest
Police Station as well as to your Embassy.

Tourists are requested to dress decently within the precincts of
religious places and monasteries.
